The first recorded instances, that we know of, regarding speaking in tongues are in the Bible. In the biblical context, people were said to have been overtaken by the holy spirit and began speaking in languages which were previously unknown to them while they were in a state of spiritual ecstasy. To this day there are accounts of people speaking in tongues. Nowadays, at least in religious contexts, most of these accounts take place by people who belong to what are known as charismatic churches in which speaking in tongues and faith healing are more widely practiced than in other churches.
In addition to the type of speaking in tongues which happen in a Christian or religious context, we also hear accounts of people such as mediums or others having a spiritual experience who are instantly able to speak and sometimes even write in languages which they had no prior knowledge of. There have been accounts of people who have been said to suddenly have the ability of speaking in Swedish, English, Egyptian, and other languages. To date, most of these claims have been proven mostly false when placed under more scrutiny. There have however, been a few instances in which the person under examination has been proven to be able to speak at least a few words or phrases in a previously unknown language. There is no scientific explanation for those cases to date.
In most cases however, it has been shown that the original evidence in favor of the truth of speaking in tongues was exaggerated due to the desire to believe or outright falsified. As for the instances of religious speaking in tongues, there is no way to prove them. This is because the languages coming from the mouths of those speaking in tongues are not languages which are known languages. It is said by believers that the language of those speaking in tongues in a religious context is a heavenly language which isn’t known to us on Earth. While, speaking in tongues has interested people from all walks of life, there is little to no evidence to support that it is real.
