The prompt for NaPoWriMo today is to write landays. Before today, I hadn’t heard of this form of poetry. When I went to learn more about them, I got caught up in reading. Landays are the poems of women in Afghanistan, typically oral instead of written. In these poems, these women speak out about their oppression in ways which are sometimes stunning and in other instances quite funny or even bawdy. I will be seeking out more examples in the future to read. Anyway…back to the form. The poems are usually composed of one simple couplet, with the first line having 9 syllables and the second line having 13. The prompt was to write either one profound landay or to string together several of them. I decided to go with the standard form of one couplet.
You’re my husband, why do you hate me
At one time I loved you, now I dream of being free
