The prompts for NaPoWriMo which I am following can be found here. The prompt for day 8 was to write a palinode which is a poem in which you retract what you wrote in a previous poem. I will rewrite the aubade which I wrote on day 6, which was a poem about a beautiful morning. Below is the original poem, followed by the palinode.
Birdsong drifts in the window, carried by the day’s first rays of sun
Or is it the other way around?
Perhaps it is the heart lifting chirping which carries the light
My lips curve into a smile as I think about how I’ve been greeted into the day
I slowly open one eye, just in time to see a brilliant orange butterfly drift past
Carried along by the gentle current which is scented with chamomile and grass
The very same current which teases my hair as I sit at the edge of the bed
My eyes close again, not in sleep but in sheer delight
I sometimes think that I do not remember many of my dreams
But with my senses so vividly delighted this morning I think…
With such beauty surrounding me, life itself is the most delightful of all dreams
Oh make it stop!
This chirping hurts my brain, and this sun…can anyone say migraine?
I slowly put on my slippers, hoping that I set the coffee pot last night
Catching sight of myself in the hallway mirror as I make my way to the kitchen, I groan
The scowl on my face will surely cause wrinkles
What made me think that living in the country was a good idea?
Everything here seems so chipper and perky, like that damned bird in the window taunting me
Rapping on the glass, I chase it off…too early for this shit Tweety
Ahh, the kitchen is on the dark side of the house and faces the street
This feels more like home with the muted light and soft whoosh of traffic
Perhaps I should go back to the city…or maybe lay off the martinis
Caffeine hits my blood stream and the aspirin kicks in
I still dislike the country and would rather keep my gin.
