NaPoWriMo Day 1 ~ What Love Isn’t

The prompt for today on the NaPoWriMo  site is to write a poem of negation. I chose to write about what love isn’t.

It can’t be found on an internet dating site
Within a selfie snapped half naked in the bathroom mirror

There are no flashing neon letters above it
To prove that it is there

We aren’t going to hear it coming down the street
With whistles and bells to announce its arrival

Despite its warmth we can’t reach out and stroke it
Like a purring cat which is curled upon our laps

It isn’t going to fill you with turmoil
As it whispers endearments on the tails of lies

True love has no need to diminish another
To make itself feel more important

You will never find it bullying someone
In order to get what it wants from them

And it sure isn’t a pretender who lies in wait
For someone to prey upon in a moment of weakness

  1. Nicely said Tracy. Although I have to disagree with “We aren’t going to hear it coming down the street, With whistles and bells to announce its arrival”. You obviously don’t have a local ice cream that makes the rounds in your neighbourhood. 😉
