A to Z Day 1 ~ Afterlife

Afterlife ~ continuation of life or an existence which is believed to follow the death of the physical body.

Call it heaven or hell, nirvana, summerland, the netherworld or whatever else you might wish to call it or believe it to be. Studies have shown that over 50% of people believe in some sort of an afterlife. The concept of life after death is a complex one, and there are almost as many theories about what the afterlife is like as there are people who believe in one.

Some believe in the idea of heaven and hell or some other place that we go to after we die, others believe in reincarnation, and there are some who believe that nothing happens at all. The concept of an afterlife opens the debate as to whether or not ghosts exist as well.

More and more people are coming forward about experiences in which they have seen what many call a ghost, whether it is someone who they personally knew in life or not. There are numerous popular TV shows which set out to capture evidence of the existence that the soul goes on after the physical body is gone. Many people have also shared stories of near-death experiences which have left them convinced that there is more to life and death than meets the eye.

The whole idea of an afterlife centers around whether or not the soul continues to go on after death…regardless of where it might go. What do you think?

  1. I think the fact that all people, regardless of culture, are searching for answers about the afterlife is evidence that there is one. Deep within our hearts, we all know this is true (in the same way that deep within our hearts, we all know that there is a right and a wrong).

I believe there is a Heaven and a Hell, and that we can find eternal life by putting our faith in Christ (John 3:16)… as Easter Sunday is coming up this weekend, it’s the perfect time to look into this!

  2. This is such a fascinating topic. I agree with johnmarkmiller in that everyone is searching for answers, including myself. I grew up Catholic and thus believe in heaven/hell, but as I grew into my own person, I now find myself questioning other possibilities. The “what ifs” as they pertain to death and what happens. I would say that I’m hoping for the best, but preparing for the “worst” (the worst case scenario being a dreamless sleep).

  3. I just watched a television special about this topic last night. I have read many books about near death experiences as I am very interested. I do believe that when we die it isn’t the end.

    • Hi Cheryl. I do not believe that it is the end either. It used to bother me to not know the answer to what happens after that point, but the older I get the more okay I am with mystery.

  4. I struggle with my personal beliefs of what happens to us after we die but I know that I saw my Grandmother within minutes of her death. She was at peace. I haven’t seen her since, but….
    Great topic of discussion.

  5. I would like to believe in an afterlife….I’ve often wondered if people started believing in an afterlife b/c it’s so hard to accept that this life is all we get, that there has to be something meaningful on the other side and we get to see our loved ones again. It’s a nice thought but I remain skeptical.
