NaPoWriMo Day 20 ~ A Poem In the Voice of My Mother

Today’s prompt at NaPoWriMo is to write a poem in the voice of a family member. I’m choosing my mother, who has been gone for twelve years now. This poem is written in her best voice, the one that many people never got to hear…the one hidden behind her bipolar illness and pain. Some of the lines will be ones that my mother actually wrote in the little book pictured below that she got for me over twenty years ago. Her words will be in italics. There are other sentiments in this poem that she expressed to me over the years during times when she was doing the best that she could to teach me to live differently than she had, even when she couldn’t bear to let me get out there and do it.

Keep Believing

Life can be fun
As long as we believe it and let no one take it away

Learn to say no with warmth and kindness
Don’t beat yourself up when you need to say no
Stay your sweet self and take time out for you

One thing I’ve learned is that you have to take care of yourself
For if you don’t the world will swallow you whole

You’re one in a million
Don’t let anyone treat you as anything less

People vilify that which they cannot understand
Trust me, I’ve lived my whole life seeing and feeling this

Be happy and make someone special happy
Just be sure that they are worthy of your efforts
For they will take your love even when they have no right

Creation is beautiful and so are you
See yourself when you see beauty in nature
For you are reflected in the petals of the rose

Dance to the beat of your own drum no matter what
For our own rhythm is the most important

Don’t waste a day worrying about what someone thinks
Which is different from caring how they might feel

Be sure to guard your heart from those who would steal it away
Love yourself enough to have no doubt about what love is
So that you can tell the difference when someone else says that they do

Don’t make the same mistakes that I have made by living in fear
When you meet those who try to crush your spirit, run the other way
Never let them extinguish that light that shines deep inside
Make the most of life for it can be over all too fast
