Settling In

I’ve been in Asheville for ten days now and absolutely love it so far. Even though it’s been a whirlwind of activity…getting unpacked and all of the moving to a new city business taken care of…I’ve also gotten out to check things out too. This place really does have all of the stuff that I thought it would and then some! There’s still so much to explore, but what I’ve already seen has been fantastic. My sister and brother-in-law have been showing me around and it’s been so much fun.

There are a plethora of shops here which offer all of the things which I love that it’s almost hard to describe. I’ve seen crystals, incense galore (the good stuff), tarot cards, cool clothing, books, coffee, tea, spices, organic food, and more. This isn’t even counting the restaurant choices which offer fare from vegetarian to Mediterranean to Indian to Thai….well you get the drift…it’s awesome! My sister and I went to the Jerusalem Garden Cafe on Saturday and it was fantastic. We had a platter with hummus, grape leaves, falafel, tabouleh,  and tahini salad which we shared, then we had the kafta kabobs. We’ve also gone to a few other restaurants, including a Cuban place, and I’ve got to say that Asheville definitely has the food thing down to an art.

The street musicians are really great too. I’ve already seen (and heard) a sax player who was great, fiddlers, cloggers, bluegrass, blues players, and I am probably forgetting a few but they were all really good. One day while out and about with my sister and her hubby we wandered down Lexington Avenue and there is a shop there which had an entire wall…a long one too…of nothing but different tarot decks, and also a wall of really great incense including some of the best lemon incense I’ve ever sniffed. I’ll be going back there and once I am sure of the name of the place I’ll write more about it. I had been looking at a particular deck of cards online for a while and had not ordered it. Well, he had it there and I got it. So far it seems to be a really great deck. Not one for doing the sort of readings I do here for everyone, but more for personalized readings.

If at all possible, I’m going to be staying closer to home for a few days and resting up. All of the moving activities, etc. have caught up with me and I am experiencing a fibro crash of sorts. I’ve had worse and am perfectly okay. My body is just telling me that it is time to slow down a little for a few days or so. I am not used to doing as much walking as I’ve done since I’ve been here either. Before moving, I made the decision to get rid of my car for various reasons, so everywhere I’ve been so far has mostly been on foot. Yesterday was my first experience with the public transportation system here and I have to say that it was a pleasant one. A person can pretty much get all that they need in the downtown area, but the bus is there otherwise. After being so inactive for a few years, it is a real switch to be out walking so much. I’m hurting, but happy because I’ve been wanting to get out more before, but there just wasn’t much to get out and do. This is not the case any longer!

This is where I want to thank my sister from the bottom of my heart. She has been so incredible in so many ways…from showing me the ropes here, to helping me get things set up in the apartment, and being here to hang out and have fun. If it weren’t for her, my moving transition would not have been nearly as smooth. So…thank you dear sister! Now that all of the business stuff is taken care of (except for the behemoth dresser project), we can just relax and have some more fun.

I’ve also been doing some knitting. Yes, I am still working on the head scarf and is getting closer to being finished. I confess though that I have laid it aside for the past few days and have been working on my first ever item of real clothing. It’s a hooded cardigan and when finished it is going to be really awesome. Of course I’ll post pics when I get it done. Also coming up soon there will be a meeting of a group called Sisters in Stitches which my sister has belonged to for quite a while and which I joined right before moving. I’m really excited about getting out and meeting some fellow yarn junkies.

Here are my plans for the blog. I am hoping to resume the readings this weekend and get back on track there. Plus, next week I am going to try to get some pictures taken so that I can share them with all of you. It’s going to take a while to get back into the swing of things. Plus I have to admit that I have been enjoying the real world and spending some long overdue time with my sister, who I hadn’t seen in two years, that being online hasn’t been much of a thought. After spending four years in a place with nothing of interest to me, it has been great to get away from the computer and out doing things. Things are slowing down a bit now though and I will be around more than I have for a while. At the end of my stay in my old location, there just wasn’t much to write about because there was not much going on.

I also have some spiritual exploration to do here. This community is very open and varied with quite a few things I wish to look into. This is something which I will write about as I check things out more. Now you know what I’ve been up to. Hopefully things are going wonderfully for all of you. I thank you for your patience with the blog while I’m making this transition in my life. With so much going on here, I have a feeling that this blog is going to be better than ever. See you again real soon!
